1181 (Syston) Squadron were invited to attend RAF Witterings Family and Friends day on Friday 22nd July.
Amongst the group were 3 very new Junior Cadets who had been with the Squadron for just 2 weeks! Needless to say they were very excited to be going to an RAF base for the first time. None of us really knew what to expect from the day. We arrived at 0900 hours and joined other Squadrons from the Wing. We were told by WO Wiggs that some Cadets would be needed for car parking duties and some would be needed to hand out leaflets. As our Junior Cadets had not been issued uniform they were told to stay with Cadets who had uniform and just be on the lookout for FOD throughout the day. There were exhibitions from the likes of 2 MT, Bomb Disposal, RAFA, RAF Benevolent Fund, Royal Marine Commandos, Royal British Legion etc. The Cadets were keen to get as much free stuff as they could. They spent most of the day either in the vehicles of 2 MT or at the weapons display of the RAF Regiment! However, once the flying display started they were to be seen using their camera skills at the front of the crowd line.
They were also to be found sharing their newly found knowledge with members of the public, who commented afterwards on "what polite and pleasant young men they were!" Towards the end of the day there was to have been a FOD plod, but there were no gloves to be had so Cadets were volunteered to help take down the tents and pick up a few more freebies! A good day was had by all.
