On Sunday 3rd July 2011, 1181 (Syston) Squadron, set off from Leicester, for RAF Wittering to compete in the Annual Wing Field Day competition.
Wing Field Day comprises of competitions in Drill, Leadership Exercises, First Aid, Shooting, Aircraft Recognition, Media and Diorama and models. ALL 29 Squadrons in the Wing take part and competition is always fierce! The day started early for our Squadron with the coach picking us up at 0730 hours. Even at that time in the morning it was still very warm! The Air Cadets had been practising for weeks and were full of hope and expectation! The first thing to do was set up home for the day, a gazebo to the rear of Wing Headquarters. The model and diorama was being set up as the Drill Squad took to the square to perform their routine. After this followed Aircraft Recognition tests, First Aid, Shooting and finally for our Squadron was the Leadership Exercise. Everyone by now was very hot and tired but still in high spirits! Final Parade was announced! Expectations were still high! Fg Off Kenyon was announced as the winner of the Staff Media Project (he had to design a calendar) and the Squadron were announced as overall winners of the Media Competition. At the end we were told we had finished in 11th position! We were all over the moon as last year we had finished 28th, an increase of 17 places! Leaving the Squadron as the highest placed Squadron in Leicester and the second highest in Leicestershire. Everyones hard work had paid off and the Squadron were rewarded with a top half finish. Fantastic result. What a happy coach returned to Syston! Very well done to everyone involved!
