Twenty cadets from 1181 (Syston) Squadron have recently received first aid training in order to gain the Heartstart Award offered by The British Heart Foundation.
The course was taken by Flying Officer Liam McGuire, who guided the cadets through the skills needed in order to gain the certificate. Over the two evenings the cadets learnt how to buy time, whilst waiting for the arrival of paramedics, learning how to respond to common medical emergencies.
Some of the first aid taught included, assessing an unconscious patient, how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to deal with choking and what to do if they suspect a patient may be having a heart attack.
The cadets now hope to build on what they have learnt on their Heartstart course, to gain further certificates and gain badges of which they can wear on their uniform.
